Academic Presentations and Communication

In this workshop, the academic presentation is central. Why do we present at conferences and what is the main purpose and function of giving academic presentations?

We explore why presenting is challenging. What are the main challenges of speaking in public and how can you overcome these challenges. Central issues are related to preparation but also to more fundamental aspects such as journeys and outcomes.

We briefly present some rules of communication which can help us to understand the choices we make when we speak but also the evaluations we make when we listen, often driving our own preconceived ideas of what is good public speaking or even a good academic presentations? Are there general rules of communication we need to follow?

Finally, we discuss the journey and of course the audiences who we have to take into consideration when presenting.

To get you started to think about your own presentation for the course, follow the guiding questions at the end of the final video.
